01 — LIVE COUNTDOWNSTime until the next reset
Grok's weekly reset is personal, so an honest countdown needs your anchor. Open Settings → Usage, read your reset day and time, and set them below — the timer then mirrors your real pool. The other two cards cover the clocks that aren't countdowns at all: the API's rolling per-minute refill (illustrated, not scheduled) and the one-year life of Extra Usage Credits.
Next weekly pool reset
Resets —
xAI does not publish whether the schedule is anchored to UTC or follows your device — it simply shows each account its reset date and time in the Usage tab. Enter the day and time exactly as shown there; this timer treats them as your local time.
The API's minute, visualised — not a reset
Seconds in the current clock minute — shown only to make the scale tangible.
API limits are requests per second (RPS) and tokens per minute (TPM), per model, per team, enforced on rolling windows anchored to your team's own traffic — not to the wall clock. There is no moment when every team's budget refills at once, so there is nothing to count down to; this ticker just shows how short a minute is. Breach a cap and the API returns HTTP 429; xAI's docs recommend exponential backoff rather than a timer.
Credits don't refill. They expire one year after purchase.
Enter the date you bought Extra Usage Credits to see when the balance expires.
Credits are consumed only after your included weekly pool runs out, and any leftover balance expires one year after purchase (unless other terms are stated at checkout). They are bought on the web only, from $5, and priced at standard rates — so a balance you forget about is money with a deadline.
02 — THE CYCLESEvery Grok reset cycle, with times & time zones
Five mechanisms get called a “Grok reset.” Only the first one is a true weekly clock — and its exact moment belongs to your account, not to a public schedule.
| Cycle | When it resets, exactly | Time zone behaviour | Who it applies to |
|---|---|---|---|
| Weekly usage pool fixed · weekly · account schedule |
Once a week, at the reset date and time shown in Settings → Usage. The pool is one shared allowance across Chat, Imagine, Voice, Build and the in-plan API slice — spend it all on one product or spread it around. Introduced June 2026, replacing per-product daily limits. | xAI does not publish a universal weekday, time, or anchoring time zone. Your Usage tab shows your reset date and time — that display is the authoritative source, which is why the countdown above takes it as an input. | All paid consumer plans: Plus, Premium, Super, Ultra (the unified X Subscription) and legacy SuperGrok plans. |
| Free-tier limits separate · unpublished |
Free Chat and Voice limits run on their own schedule, separate from the weekly pool — they are what remains available when a paid pool is exhausted. xAI publishes no fixed counts and no reset times for the free tier; limits are communicated in-product when you approach or hit them. | No published schedule or time zone. The limit message in the app is the only reliable statement of when free access returns. | Free accounts, and paid accounts that have exhausted their weekly pool (Chat and Voice fallback). |
| Extra Usage Credits no reset · 1-year expiry |
Credits never “reset.” They are drawn down only after the included weekly pool is exhausted, and any remaining balance expires one year after purchase. Auto Top Up can add more automatically, up to a monthly cap you set. | Expiry is tied to the purchase timestamp, not to a calendar boundary or time zone. | Paid accounts that buy top-ups (web only, from $5). |
| API rate limits per-second / per-minute · no fixed reset |
No reset moment. Each model carries an RPS cap (derived from the per-minute request budget: RPM ÷ 48, minimum 2) and a TPM cap, enforced per team. Example — grok-4.7: Tier 0 allows 150 RPS / 50M TPM, Tier 4 allows 500 RPS / 100M TPM. All tokens count toward TPM, including cached prompt tokens. Over the cap → HTTP 429. | Windows are rolling seconds and minutes — identical worldwide, no time zone involved. | Developer teams in the xAI Console. Tiers are set by cumulative API spend since Jan 1, 2026 ($0 / $50 / $250 / $1,000 / $5,000) and never downgrade. |
| Legacy per-product daily limits retired · pre-June 2026 |
Before June 2026, each product (Chat, Imagine, Voice…) had its own daily allowance, and older Grok-on-X systems used short fixed windows — the origin of the “N messages every 2 hours” and “resets at midnight UTC” claims still circulating in articles and AI answers. | Historical. Any page presenting these as current Grok rules is out of date. | Nobody, on current plans. Kept here so you can recognise stale information when you meet it. |
About exact message counts: xAI publishes no fixed number of messages, images, or videos for any Grok plan — the pool is a percentage weighted by compute, so no honest count exists. If a site gives you an exact daily message quota for a current Grok plan, it invented it or copied a retired one.
03 — BY PLANThe unified X Subscription, legacy SuperGrok & the API
Since October 2026, new customers buy Grok through one unified subscription that also bundles X Premium features and Cursor; pools are published as multiples of the Plus base pool, not as message counts. Existing subscribers can stay on legacy SuperGrok and X Premium plans, which keep the same weekly-pool mechanics.
| Plan | Price (US) | Weekly pool | Reset behaviour |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | None — limited daily access to Chat and agent features | Separate free-tier limits on their own unpublished schedule; no weekly pool |
| Plus | $8/mo | The base shared pool (1×) — Grok Chat, Voice, Imagine, Build, in-plan API access, Cursor | Weekly reset on your account's schedule (Settings → Usage) |
| Premium | $30/mo | 4× Plus — adds Grok Bot, latest models, image & video generation | Identical weekly clock; bigger pool |
| Super | $100/mo | 15× Plus — priority model access at peak times | Identical weekly clock; bigger pool |
| Ultra | $200/mo | Largest pool (reported as 50× Plus at launch), earliest access to new products | Identical weekly clock; bigger pool |
| Legacy SuperGrok / X Premium | $30/mo SuperGrok · $300/mo SuperGrok Heavy · $8/mo X Premium · $40/mo X Premium+ (US web) | Weekly pool on grok.com plans; on X, Premium was described as “increased Grok limits” and Premium+ as “higher limits,” with no published numbers | Same weekly-pool system on grok.com; existing subscribers may keep legacy plans instead of switching |
| xAI API (Console) | Pay per token · prepaid credits or invoicing | — no weekly pool — | Per-model RPS / TPM by spend tier, refilling continuously; API credits are non-refundable |
- Upgrading buys pool, not time: every paid tier resets on the same weekly rhythm. A higher plan means the percentage drains slower — Premium's pool is 4× Plus, Super's is 15× — not that the reset arrives sooner.
- The pool is shared across products: Chat, Imagine, Voice, Build (and Grok Bot and Cursor on the unified subscription) all draw from the same weekly percentage. A weekend of video generation can end your week's chat.
- Weighted by compute, not actions: a text reply costs little; a high-quality video or a long coding-agent run costs a lot. The Usage tab's per-product breakdown is the only place the real weights show up.
04 — YOUR NUMBERSWhere to check your own usage & reset time
Your Usage tab is the only authoritative source for your reset — no public page, including this one, can know your schedule. Three official places to look:
Grok app & web — Settings → Usage
grok.com → Settings → UsageShows your weekly pool as a progress bar and percentage, the breakdown by product (API, Build, Chat, Imagine, Voice), your exact weekly reset date and time, and your Extra Usage Credits balance with Auto Top Up settings. Available on web and mobile.

When does the Grok limit reset?
On a paid plan, your shared weekly usage pool resets once a week, on the schedule shown in Settings → Usage. xAI publishes no universal reset day or time — two accounts can reset on different days. Free-tier limits on Chat and Voice run on their own separate schedule, and the xAI API has no reset at all: its per-second and per-minute windows refill continuously.
Does Grok reset daily at midnight UTC?
Not anymore. Before June 2026, paid Grok products carried separate daily limits, and a large stock of articles — and AI answers trained on them — still describe daily quotas resetting at midnight UTC. xAI replaced that system with one shared weekly pool. The only weekly moment that matters now is the reset date and time in your own Usage tab.
How many messages do I get on Grok?
Nobody can tell you — xAI does not publish a message count for any plan. Paid usage is a single weekly pool displayed as a percentage, and every action draws an amount based on the compute it needs: a short chat message is cheap, a high-quality video or a long Grok Build session is expensive. Plans are compared as multiples of the Plus pool (Premium 4×, Super 15×), never as message quotas.
Are the old limits — “10 messages every 2 hours” — still real?
No. Fixed per-window message caps belonged to Grok's older limit systems, on both grok.com and X, before the June 2026 weekly-pool change. Pages still quoting fixed 2-hour windows or daily Think / DeepSearch quotas are describing a retired system. If a limit stops you today, the notice in the product — and the Usage tab — states the current rule.
What happens when I hit the weekly limit?
Paid features pause until the pool resets — it is not a hard lockout. You keep the separate free-tier limits on Chat and Voice, which run on their own schedule. To keep using paid features you can buy Extra Usage Credits (from $5, web only), turn on Auto Top Up with a monthly cap you choose, or upgrade to a plan with a larger weekly pool.
Do Extra Usage Credits expire or reset?
They don't reset — they are spent, and any leftover balance expires one year after purchase unless other terms are stated. Credits are used only after your included weekly allowance runs out, they are priced at standard rates (a worse per-action price than your plan's included usage, which is why xAI steers heavy users toward upgrading), and they can currently be purchased on the web only.
Is the xAI API limit the same as my subscription limit?
No — two different systems. A subscription gives you a weekly pool measured as a percentage. The developer API is metered per team in the xAI Console: per-model RPS and TPM limits set by your spend tier, plus pay-per-token billing. One nuance causes real confusion: your subscription's Usage tab breaks the pool down by product and one slice is labelled “API” — that is in-plan API-shaped usage against the pool, not a developer API credit balance in the Console.
How do xAI API rate limits reset?
They don't reset at a fixed time — they are continuous per-second and per-minute windows. Each model has an RPS cap and a TPM cap for your tier; tiers come from cumulative API spend since January 1, 2026 (Tier 0 at $0, Tier 4 at $5,000) and never downgrade. Exceeding a cap returns HTTP 429, and xAI's docs recommend exponential backoff. Everything counts toward TPM — prompt, completion and reasoning tokens, and cached prompt tokens too.
Are Grok limits on X different from grok.com?
Historically, yes. Grok inside X was governed by your X plan — X Help describes Premium as including increased Grok usage limits and Premium+ as including higher limits, with no numbers published — and xAI states it has no operational oversight of X's service. Since October 2026, new customers buy Grok through the unified X Subscription (Plus, Premium, Super, Ultra), where paid seats use the same kind of shared weekly pool as grok.com. Existing subscribers can stay on their legacy plans.
Why did my Grok usage drain so fast?
Because the pool is weighted by compute, not by actions. High-quality Imagine video, long Grok Build or agent tasks, and heavy reasoning all cost far more than plain chat — one afternoon of video can consume what a week of chatting wouldn't. Open Settings → Usage and read the breakdown by product (API, Build, Chat, Imagine, Voice) to find the culprit before assuming Chat did it.
Where can I see my exact Grok reset time?
On grok.com or in the Grok app: Settings → Usage — weekly percentage, per-product breakdown, your exact reset date and time, and your credits balance. For the API: the xAI Console's Models page (tier and per-model limits) and Billing (charges and credits). Feed the day and time from your Usage tab into the countdown at the top of this page and it will mirror your pool.
